The six-square-mile jurisdiction in the heart of Northern Virginia was founded in 1805 as the Town of Providence. Known for its courthouse, it was for a time known as Fairfax Courthouse, then as the Town of Fairfax. The City of Fairfax was established as the independent city in 1961. The city celebrates its past and embraces the future, and encourages it residents, business leaders and visitors to find out more about this fascinating city.

This is in addition to three annual flagship events: the day-long Independence Day celebration, recognized as the best parade and most colorful fireworks in the area; the Fall Festival, where Old Town Fairfax opens its streets to hundreds of renown craft merchants and thousands of visitors; and the Holiday Craft Show, which fills Fairfax High School with amazing handcrafted wares that bring shoppers from surrounding states.

Perhaps the most important area of all, the city is rightfully proud of its support for the educational opportunities afforded its children. Broad-based community support for schools is evidenced by a recent passage of a General Obligation bond referendum by more than 80 percent of those at the polls. The university provides the community with world-class thinkers, musical and cultural events, nationally recognized sports teams and Olympic athletes.
